Reliable information for patients

Diagnosed with “prostatitis,” but treatment is not helping?

You have had tests and taken antibiotics, but the symptoms remain or keep coming back. There may be another explanation worth considering.

01

Familiar symptoms?

These symptoms can have different causes and may occur in different combinations.
1

Pelvic pain

Dull, aching or episodic pain in the perineum. It may radiate to the groin, testicles, lower abdomen or sacrum.

2

Urinary symptoms

Burning, discomfort or pain in the urethra. Frequent urges, especially at night. A feeling of incomplete emptying or a weaker urine stream.

3

Sexual symptoms

Discomfort or pain during or after ejaculation. Reduced sexual desire or problems with erections.

4

Reduced quality of life

Fatigue, anxiety, irritability and low mood when pain and discomfort remain a constant background problem.

02

You may already have been treated for prostatitis

You may have had tests, examinations and several courses of antibiotics. Sometimes treatment brought only temporary relief, and the symptoms later returned.

03

Two simple questions

These questions may help reveal a pattern in how your symptoms behave.
Question 1 Have you taken a warm bath? Does the pain or discomfort lessen afterwards?

Many people notice that comfortably warm water reduces pain and tension in the pelvic area. Relief may occur during the bath or within about 15–20 minutes afterwards.

Question 2 Have you noticed that your symptoms temporarily become weaker after drinking alcohol?

Think back to whether your symptoms have ever decreased for a while after alcohol. That pattern can be a useful clue. There is no need to drink alcohol deliberately to test this.
